Plants needs nitrogen to survive! Here’s how to introduce it to your plants and soil naturally.

Plants need nitrogen to survive. This is no mystery. This is fundamental science. The mystery has always been, how do we get plants the nitrogen they need to survive and thrive? The answer for centuries has been nitrogen fertilizers, and we know the issues these can create to our ecosystem. The good news is that there is a better option, and that is nitrogen-fixing microbes! Biological nitrogen fixation is a more economic, ecological, and a more profitable option than fertilizers.

Nitrogen-fixing microbes, like Azospirillum, transform atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for the plant. Using nitrogen based fertilizers lead to nitrogen deficiency over time which stuns crop growth and health. Lets not get into nitrogen runoff and the devastation these fertilizers do to our streams and waterways. Fortunately, this can be avoided entirely! These amazing microbes take the nitrogen in as a gas and release it into the soil as ammonia, which the plants can easily access.

So why is this all important?

Nitrogen is required for chlorophyll molecules. Chlorophyll is important for photosynthesis which we know is essential for glucose production for the plants energy. This is a much better option for gardeners, and traditional farmers than using nitrogen fertilizers. Naturally we can achieve the same goal, while establishing long lasting health for the plant and overall soil biome.

We will continue to dive into these amazing microbes, specifically azospirillum over the next few weeks.

Do you use a nitrogen-fixing microbe? Have you ever used azospirillum?
